Welcome to the first post in our brand new journal layout series! Each article will break down popular ways to set up your monthly, weekly, and daily spreads so you can find what truly works for you, especially if you’re just starting your journalling journey. In this post, we’re kicking things off with three practical ways to design your monthly spread, complete with real-life examples and plenty of inspiration to get you started (plus, don’t forget to check out the community showcase section below!).
1. Expanded Monthly Spread

Perfect for planners who want maximum space. If you want your monthly spread to do it all, this layout is for you. The expanded 2-page layout offers large boxes for each day, so you can write out every appointment, birthday, work schedule, deadline, or special note in full detail. There’s no need for any shorthand or squishing and everything is clearly visible. This is especially helpful if you juggle family plans, multiple projects, or love making memory notes throughout the month. Decorative touches stay subtle so the spotlight stays on your schedule.
📝 Best for: Busy planners, memory keepers, anyone with lots of events, teachers, etc.
2. Monthly Spread with Side Panel

A great pick for those who like some structure but also crave flexibility. This hybrid spread gives you a large structured calendar paired with a convenient sidebar for a more personalized, creative space. This layout works well for bullet journal fans, or anyone who likes jotting quick notes and seeing everything at a glance. The side panel can be used for bonus sections and can hold so much like:
- To-do list for the month
- Quotes, affirmations, or goals you want to focus on
- Gratitude log (write one thing per day!)
- Habit trackers
- Monthly reflections or highlights
📝 Best for: Bullet journalers, minimalists, and anyone who likes to document but also needs monthly focus.
3. Compact Monthly Spread

Short on space? Prefer quick bullet points, mini icons, or just want a lighter planner? This compact layout keeps your journal slim and easy to carry, while still letting you track major plans. This style is perfect for busy lives or anyone who prefers to keep it light and portable. This layout fits the full month into a single page and you can pair it with a side page of to-do lists, appointments and habit trackers. You can use symbols, tiny doodles, or color-coded icons to track birthdays, paydays and deadlines. The smaller format helps you focus on the absolute essentials, making it easy to spot important dates at a glance.
📝 Best for: Minimalists, on-the-go journalers, students, or anyone looking to save space in their planner.

Love these! I will definitely be trying these out!
What great ideas; I love to see the talent and creativity of our journaling community!
I love these. I specifically like the 2 spreads that drew backgrounds. The waterfall and the curio cabinet are both so creative and clever. I took screenshots so I can try those drawings. I’m brand new to bullet journaling and drawing is not my strong suit so with pictures to guide me, practice and a lot of erasers 😂 I’m slowwwwly getting better. All of the spreads are great and I love seeing the mix of stickers and drawing!
I absolutely adore all these layouts! I know it’s not a recent theme (I think) but I would really like to see spreads using stickers from the cozy cat box set. I have it and it’s one of my favorite themes but I never see anybody using them 😭 so if anybody has layouts with cozy cat then I would be so excited to see 👀
