Movie Night Monthly Spread

Here is a monthly spread tutorial with our Movie Night theme - Read on to find out how easy it is to set up a journal page with our stickers!

WHAT I USED

  • Movie Night Collection
  • Red brush pen (Tombow dual brush pen)
  • Yellow brush pen (Tombow dual brush pen)
  • Grey brush pen (Tombow dual brush pen)
  • Teal brush pen (Tombow dual brush pen)
  • Staedtler HB pencil
  • Tombow MONO Drawing pen

These materials were what I used for reference, but you may use any supplies you have on hand :)

Heading to the movies today may look very different from what they used to be, but let's take a retro spin on it and create a monthly spread based on this theme!

For this spread I settled on making a stage as the backdrop along with a simple grid for the calendar. Follow along and let's set it up together!

Start off with roughly marking the corners of the simple grid for your calendar using a pencil. I used 5x5 grids and centered it based on the guides in the journal. Although you may use any size grid for the calendar, it is important that you plan out the space you need for it before sketching the background.

After the space needed for the calendar has been determined, seats will be drawn towards the bottom of the spread. Do not worry about the seats overlapping with the grid, it can be drawn behind the seats to give the spread more depth. The background can be finished by sketching curtains at the top and sides to make the calendar the highlight of the spread.

Since we are starting in pencil, don’t feel pressured to make it perfect on the first try! Once you’re satisfied with the sketch, use a pen to go over these lines before erasing the pencil lines once the pen lines dry. Here, I am using the Tombow mono drawing pens to outline the sketch.

It’s time to colour! We are going with traditional theater colours--red for the curtains and gray for the seats. Here we are using Tombow Brush Pens: Movie (you can pick these up with the Movie Night Collection as well!).  You can always use different colours or even make the curtains patterned instead!

One tip if using brush pens to colour the curtains, is to colour so that the strokes are in the same direction or in a curve following the outline of your curtain. This allows the curtain to have that draped effect.

Here, I’ve added some thin lines with a black pen in order to give some of these curtains depth.

And now the backdrop is complete! TIme to focus on the center stage!

Using the journaling stickers I’m filling out all the days and dates. I didn't want to have a tail end of only 2 boxes for the last week of May, so I added those dates to the previous week like the picture below. You may also add another row for the last week instead, but make sure to plan out the grid according to how you’d like it!

Since there was a lot more white space on the left side than anticipated, I filled the space with some of the ticket stickers from our collection! On the other side, the empty spot on the right is dedicated for my to-do list. To make each to-do brighter, I drew lines using the Tombow movie brush pen shades.

P.S. Don't forget to colour in the curtain ties!

And that's a wrap! Now you have yourself a beautiful monthly spread for May!
